Minnesota’s first Renaissance Festival opened in Chaska (actually, it was in a new, experimental suburb called Jonathan—but that’s another story) on September 11, 1971. One of the festival’s wandering “vassals” enthusiastically described the event that year as “the Renaissance without the lepers, open sewers and plague.” And somehow, despite its better-than-the-plague reputation, the festival is still going strong 42 years later.
